Ahh, award season is upon us!
It kicked off last night at the 72nd annual Golden Globes in Beverly Hills, CA at 8pm on NBC. Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the Globes honored the best in film, television. This year, online streaming series also proved they were worthy. The star-studded event is usually known for surprises & upsets in awards, and tonight was no different!
Tina and Amy had me laughing from the start. Their opening bit took jabs at just about everyone in the room. A quick on-stage game of “Which Would You Rather” taught us Amy Poehler likes it “Ruffalo” and it takes Tina Fey about three hours to transform into a “human woman”.
Inappropriate jokes were expected, but I don’t think anyone was ready for the comedy duo’s Bill Cosby joke. Yikes! It was a tad tasteless.
Fey & Poehler nearly broke the Internet with arguably their funniest & most retweeted joke of the night. Tina Fey said:
“George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year.
Amal is a human rights lawyer, who worked on the Enron case, was an advisor to Kofi Annan regarding Syria, and was selected to a three-person U.N. commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza Strip.
So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award.”
Well played Tina Fey, well played!
There were plenty of Kim Jong jokes to go around, and did anyone catch Jeremy Renner calling JLo’s tits “golden globes” while they were presenting for Best Actor in a Mini Series Adapted for Film?
No?Just me? Okay. It was spot on though!
Gina Rodriguez’s emotional acceptance speech brought a tear to every eye in the room! Congratulations on winning Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her breakout role in Jane the Virgin (CW). The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) recently called her “the next big thing” and it looks like they were right. Rodriguez beat Lena Dunham, Taylor Schilling, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Edie Falco for the win.
Common and John Legend picked up the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, “Glory” in the film SELMA. Well deserved! Common’s moving acceptance speech doubled as a call to action: “Now is our time to change the world. Selma is now.”
George Clooney was honored with the DeMille award for his excellence in acting over the years.
Kevin Spacey FINALLY won for Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama for his role as Frank Underwood in the Netflix original series House of Cards. This is a huge win for Spacey, because he was nominated eight times before, and didn’t win until last night. And he managed to drop the f-bomb live on network television.
Transparent took home quite a few Golden Globes last night. Notably, Jeffrey Tambor won Best Actor in a TV Comedy for his performance on the show. He dedicated this huge win to the transgender community.
Showtime’s The Affair provided a few upsets, with Ruth Wilson winning Best Actress in a TV Drama. The show also grabbed the Golden Globe for Best TV Drama over Netflix’s House of Cards, Game of Thrones (HBO), Downtown Abbey (PBS), and the Good Wife (CBS).
But now, let’s talk FASHION. It was insanely hard to pick, with so many beautiful red carpet looks this year! But these men & women shined like true Hollywood stars. Here are my favorite looks!
Jennifer Lopez slayed the entire red carpet in this glittery Zuhair Murad gown. Va-va voom hair, a smoky eye paired with nude lips, minimal accessories and matching stilettos completed a gorgeous look that only JLo could pull off!
I mean seriously, she looks this good at 45?! She can do no wrong in my eyes.
Kate Hudson will definitely be at the top of the Fashion Police Best Dressed list. Kate’s ensemble has everything you could ask for in a red carpet dress and more. The plunging neck line coupled with diamond encrusted cut outs on both sides make for a head-turning look. Kate Hudson slicked back her hair into an elegant bun, and let this white Versace gown steal the show.
It takes a special kind of lady to wear yellow. Although I wasn’t a fan of her hair style, Naomi Watts looked beautiful in this Gucci dress. But what really made her red carpet look buzz-worthy is her Bvlgari snake statement necklace!
Kerry Washington dazzles us again, donning a Mary Katrantzou gown in shades of textured, metallic purple. At last year’s Golden Globes the Scandal star looked effortlessly stylish with her baby bump. Washington’s selection last night followed suit, and would make her equally stylish on-screen character Olivia Pope very proud.
Emma Stone and Lorde ditched the traditional long gowns for pantsuits at this year’s Golden Globes and I absolutely love them for it. Stone’s ensemble featured a black satin train with a bow. Her signature red tresses and sweet smile worked for me!
Lorde opted out of her usual vampy dark look for a classic red lip and this Narciso Rodriguez suit. Major style points for Lorde!
Quvenzhane Wallis, star of the newest film adaptation of Annie, has to be the cutest 11 year old to ever wear Armani. Although she did not take home a Globe, she represented herself well and looked very elegant and polished in this soft purple hue.
LADIES IN RED:
Taylor Schilling (Orange Is the New Black), Lena Dunham (Girls), Julianna Margulies, Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder) and Catherine Zeta-Jones all wore red gowns to the show. BUT my absolute favorite lady in red last night was Allison Williams (below).
This gown is everything! I couldn’t take my eyes of her. Williams gave us old school Hollywood glamour with her hair style, and a confident, beautiful smile all night long. Well done.
BEST DRESSED MEN & COUPLES:
You know I couldn’t leave out the guys. Several men who I thought were best dressed all had one thing in common: their gorgeous wives on their arm!
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum on the red carpet at the 2015 Golden Globes.
George Clooney – in Armani, & always dashing, especially with wife Amal Alamuddin on his arm!
Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves on the red carpet. Gotta love that piercing stare & scruffy beard on Matthew!
Matt Bomer is styled to perfection as usual. Congrats on taking home the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Mini-Series or TV Movie for The Normal Heart (HBO).
In my opinion, there weren’t too many bad outfit choices at this year’s Globes. But these selections missed the bar.
I’m sorry but NO, Keira Knightley, no. This Chanel dress is unflattering and gives me Amish, not red carpet vibes. She takes the #1 spot for the worst dressed of the night.
Melissa McCarthy is so funny, and down to earth. She has publicly battled with her weight before, but looks confident and great! I think she could’ve selected a dress the flatters her better than this.
Lana del Rey is giving me mermaid vibes, but not in a good way! I think the fabric and print of her dress coupled with that hairstyle didn’t suit her very well.
LIST OF WINNERS:
BuzzFeed kept up with the show all night long, just like I did. You can check out their full list of winners here.
I’m really happy for Fargo and House of Cards! And the Globes have inspired me to check out Amazon hits like Transparent.
So did your favorite celebs make my list of best/worst dressed? Were you upset with any of the winners? Tell me! Comment, like and share!
Till the next award show!
